So, without any further preamble, let's get you up and editing on Google Photos.

What's Up With Filters?

Learning how to edit photos on Android, or any other phone, often starts with Instagram filters. To anybody who's spent time on the Gram, the idea of a filter should be pretty familiar. For the uninitiated, however, these are specific effects that do certain things to any photo you apply them to. They can be as simple as applying a certain color shade to the whole photo, or as complex as messing with light sources or the same of your face.

Whether you're a relative noob to editing or someone who learned blindfolded on Adobe photo editor, Google Photos actually has a lot to offer.

Google Photos gives users access to 13 unique filters, all of which do various things. To access these:

  • Open Google Photos

  • Load the picture you will be editing

  • Scroll through your options and choose a filter you like with the slider

  • Save your photo with your new filter attached

Using 'Auto' to Great Effect

"Auto" is the first filter you can choose from in Google Photos, and it works amazingly. Artificial intelligence picks the best exposure, saturation, and other settings, taking the work out of your hands.

It doesn't always work, but "Auto" can make a big difference in your work and is worth checking out.

Adjusting Lighting and Color

Adjusting your photos' white balance is important for creating brighter and darker photos. Google Photos lets you access colors and 'pops' for each photo, as well as robust lighting sliders.

There are also options for how to edit photos in Google that go past this simpler slider bar functionality. Adjust light exposure and contrast, highlights, shadows, and vignetting, easily. You can adjust saturation, warmth, hue, and skin color, with each option available with the slider bar for maximum control. Simply:

  • Open Google Photos

  • Open the picture

  • Tap the bottommost slider icon for these editing tools

Crop and Rotate

From time to time, you may need to crop or rotate as you edit Google photos. That, or you may just want to zoom in or out. This is also 100% possible:

  • Open Google Photos

  • Open your picture

  • Hit the slider icon to open editing tools

From there, just tap the crop icon, adjust your angles, use the slider bar to zoom in and out, and rotate to your desire before saving. It's as easy as that.
